Special Needs Training and Development
NPH Haiti - Childcare (#P-HAI-18003)

NPFS Haiti brings a 30-year history and a successful track record in the delivery of high quality educational, therapeutic and residential services to individuals with disabilities.

Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere; the national poverty rate is 59% and the extreme poverty rate is 25%. Haitians are marginalized by poverty in terms of their access to nutrition, education, housing and healthcare. Within this marginalized population, individuals with disabilities are further marginalized by social and cultural prejudice making them vulnerable to abuse, neglect and abandonment.

In Haiti, less than 5% of children with disabilities attend an educational institution. Very few schools welcome these children and there is a lack of specialized teacher training.

The most significant change that this project will achieve in the short to medium term is improved quality of life for Haiti beneficiaries and their families. This will be achieved through the provision of educational, therapeutic and residential services that are at the forefront of what it is possible for individuals with disabilities to access in their own country. Improved quality of life leads to greater participation, visibility and social acceptance. Long term, this may inspire the societal shift that is required to allow individuals with disabilities enjoy the equality and full human rights to which their human dignity entitles them.

In 2017, we delivered 10 professional training workshops to educational, therapeutic and partner staff. The NPFS Special Needs Program supports these core activities through the formal and informal training of teachers, school staff, therapists and partner personnel. This training program includes elements delivered by in-house and visiting experts, as well as expat volunteers, and is necessary to strengthen our professional capacity and that of our partner organizations.
