Little Steps Daycare Center was started by a volunteer in 2005 as a means for helping single mothers with low economic resources to continue their studies or work. The center is located in a quiet neighborhood in the capital city of Tegucigalpa. It is open Mon-Fri, 6:30am-6:30pm. The staff include one full-time coordinator, one cook, two year of service students, and one full-time volunteer. The center currently cares for 18 children ranging in age from 1.5-8 years old.
The volunteer in this position would be responsible for providing support for the coordinator and will have specific authority over planning and carrying out educational activities for the children. Volunteer will share administrative and accounting responsibilities with coordinator, serve as supervisor for year of service youths who work at the center, oversee existing donors and recruit new donors, and share in daily chores which rotate among the team.
The volunteer will live at the center with the year of service students but will have a private room.
A successful candidate will have experience in childhood education and in working with children under 6 years of age, be able to work both independently and as part of a team, have strong organizational and administrative skills, have good knowledge of basic computer programs, demonstrate flexibility, and a great sense of responsibility.
A strong command of Spanish is necessary and an independent personality is recommended as the volunteer will be the only foreign volunteer at the site.
