Some of our homes allow volunteers to work in our schools, depending on the rules of the local department of education. If you want to work as a teacher note that it will be your duty to organize the entire lesson and acquire all the necessary materials. It is always helpful if a volunteer can bring extra materials and resources for your classroom. Class sizes are large by Western standards, but usually much smaller than the local school system.

The greatest challenge in the classroom involves older students who arrive in the home with little or no previous education. Several of the homes have developed alternate systems to streamline the students into the age-appropriate classes. Regardless, there are constant challenges to overcome the impediments to learning caused by previous life circumstances.

To work as a teacher in our schools, prior experience with children and a good command of Spanish is necessary. Currently, the Haitian government does not allow teachers who are not locally certified to teach. Applicants must be able to work independently and be well organized.
